Russia declares an emergency in Kursk, under attack by Ukraine. 12 killed in Russian strike on mall

Russia declares an emergency in Kursk, under attack by Ukraine. 12 killed in Russian strike on mall

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia has declared a “federal-level” emergency in the Kursk region following a large-scale incursion from Ukraine and sent reinforcements. The announcement came four days after hundreds of Ukrainian troops poured across the border in what appeared to be Kyiv’s biggest attack on Russian soil since the war began. Authorities in eastern Ukraine meanwhile said a Russian plane-launched missile hit a shopping mall late morning Friday. At least a dozen people were killed and 44 others were wounded. The mall is located in a town’s residential area. Thick black smoke rose above it after the strike. Donetsk regional head Vadym Filashkin said it was “another act of terror by the Russians.”… Continue Reading

Debby bringing heavy rain, flooding and possible tornadoes northeast into the weekend

LUCAMA, N.C. (AP) — Debby’s final chapter involves moving north and northeast from the Carolinas at a faster clip with soaking rains, flash flooding and the threat of tornadoes into the weekend. Accuweather’s chief meteorologist Jon Porter said the mid-Atlantic states and parts of New York and New England will see significant rainfall that could cause dangerous flooding into the weekend. The South Carolina town of Moncks Corner was hit early Friday by flash flooding. From eastern Virginia up to Vermont, an active stretch of tornadoes was also possible on Friday. Tornadoes spawned by Debby have leveled homes and damaged a school. The death toll has risen to 8.… Continue Reading

ABC says Trump and Harris have agreed to participate in a presidential debate on Sept. 10

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — ABC says both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have agreed to a Sept. 10 debate, setting up a face-off between the Republican and Democratic nominees. The announcement Thursday came shortly after Trump told a news conference he had proposed three presidential debates with three television networks, saying he agreed on certain dates in September. Trump is rejoining the ABC debate days after posting on his social media network that he wouldn’t appear on the network, citing a lawsuit he has filed.… Continue Reading

Walz’s military record under scrutiny as Vance, GOP question his service

Walz’s military record under scrutiny as Vance, GOP question his service

CINCINNATI (AP) — Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s military record has come under scrutiny since he was named as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket. Republicans are questioning both Walz’s characterization of his time in uniform and his departure from service. Walz served a total of 24 years in the Army National Guard before retiring in 2005. As he ramped up for a congressional bid in 2005, Walz’s campaign in March issued a statement saying he still planned to run despite a possible mobilization of Minnesota National Guard soldiers to Iraq. Walz retired from service in May of that year, according to the Guard. A mobilization order for his unit was issued in August 2005. The unit mobilized in October and was deployed to Iraq in March 2006.… Continue Reading

Vance jokes he’s checking out his future VP plane while overlapping with Harris at Wisconsin airport

Vance jokes he’s checking out his future VP plane while overlapping with Harris at Wisconsin airport

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) — Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance said he had a bit of fun Wednesday trying to catch up with Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris on an airport tarmac the two shared as part of dueling campaign travels. In Wisconsin, Vance got off former President Donald Trump’s campaign plane and walked over toward Air Force Two. He came back and told reporters he was not able to catch the vice president. Vance jabbed at Harris, as well, for not holding a news conference or sitting down for an extended interview since she began her campaign 17 days ago when President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.… Continue Reading

Tornado death raises Tropical Storm Debby toll to 7 as heavy rains keep falling

LUCAMA, N.C. (AP) — Tornadoes spawned by Tropical Storm Debby have leveled homes, damaged a school and killed one person. At least three tornadoes were reported overnight in North Carolina. Perhaps the worst has been in Lucama, a small town about 40 miles east of Raleigh. A person was found dead in a home damaged by the tornado. Other residents recounted hunkering down in their homes as the tornado ripped through overnight. Businesses about 100 miles away in the small town of Bladenboro flooded from heavy rains from Debby. The tropical storm made landfall in South Carolina early Thursday morning.… Continue Reading

Harris and Walz say they’re ‘joyful warriors,’ narrowly miss tarmac confrontation with Vance

Harris and Walz say they’re ‘joyful warriors,’ narrowly miss tarmac confrontation with Vance

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris has declared herself and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz “joyful warriors” as they spent their first full day as running mates rallying Democrats across the Midwest. But they got an idea of just how hotly contested the region will be when they overlapped on a Wisconsin tarmac with Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance. Meanwhile, the Harris campaign said Wednesday that it had raised $36 million in the first 24 hours after the vice presidential announcement. Wednesday’s trip was aimed at shoring up support among the younger, diverse, labor-friendly voters who were instrumental in helping President Joe Biden win the 2020 election. That coalition has shown signs of fraying over Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict.… Continue Reading

Tropical Storm Debby doles out repeat deluges for weather-weary residents

Tropical Storm Debby doles out repeat deluges for weather-weary residents

HUGER, S.C. (AP) — Tropical Storm Debby is still pushing bad weather up the East Coast, but floodwaters were starting to recede in South Carolina. Residents there began the near-ritualistic task of assessing the damage Wednesday. Some people whose homes were flooded said they were prepared after enduring so many previous storms. Gene Taylor lives north of Charleston along French Quarter Creek in the community of Huger. He estimates this is the fourth time he has had floodwater in his home in the past nine years. Meanwhile, residents as far away as the Great Lakes and New Jersey experienced heavy rains that are connected to the slow-moving tropical storm.… Continue Reading

Wall Street heads for second straight day of solid gains in a whipsaw week

Wall Street heads for second straight day of solid gains in a whipsaw week

NEW YORK (AP) – Wall Street is pointing sharply higher again as anxiety about a softening U.S. economy took a back seat to another trove of corporate earnings reports. Futures for the S&P 500 jumped 1% before the bell Wednesday and futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.8%. Futures for the technology-heavy Nasdaq were up 1.3%. Japanese markets also clawed back more of the losses from Monday’s wipeout. The country’s benchmark Nikkei 225 index finished 1.2% higher after a Bank of Japan official suggested the central bank would refrain from raising interest rates while markets are unstable. European markets also gained and oil prices rose.… Continue Reading

Tropical Storm Debby churns up the East Coast, and affects weather as far away as the Great Lakes

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Tropical Storm Debby pushed bad weather up the East Coast and brought no respite to residents as far away as the Great Lakes and New Jersey, where heavy rain flooded highways and streets and stranded motorists. Officials in New York told people in basement apartments to prepare to flee as forecasters warned of flash flooding. The center of Debby was over the Atlantic Ocean southeast of Charleston, South Carolina, at midday Wednesday. The storm has brought heavy rain to Florida, Georgia and North and South Carolina since coming ashore on the Gulf Coast of Florida early Monday. Debby was expected to make a second landfall in either North Carolina or South Carolina late Wednesday or early Thursday.… Continue Reading
