RALEIGH, N.C. (NCN News) – A coastal Republican lawmaker is leaving the General Assembly.

State Senator Bobby Hanig of Curritick County announced on social media that is now “officially retired from the North Carolina general assembly.”
In the post he said he wanted to thank his family for “love,encouragement, support, patience, and the many sacrifices you have made over the years. I would not have been able to do it without you.” He also thanked his legislative colleagues and his constituents.
He first joined the legislature in 2019.
Republican State Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger says Hanig’s departure should not impact legislative actions. The Senate currently has a veto proof majority and votes in the General Assembly are not expected until after the mid-term elections. A committee of Republicans in his district will name a replacement for the remainder of this term.
Democrat Melissa Zehner and Republican Jerry Tillett are running for Hanig’s seat in November
