CARY, NC (WPTF) — Cary’s Black Creek Greenway is officially reopened following the completion of a major renovation project that town officials say enhances safety, accessibility, and connectivity.
The approximately 2.5-mile improvement project was completed seven months ahead of schedule, restoring full access for residents and visitors who walk, run, and bike along the trail.
Construction began June 4, 2024, with an anticipated three-year timeline. Through a more efficient construction phasing approach developed in collaboration with the contractor, Cary completed the project ahead of schedule, avoiding slower winter construction conditions and reducing overall project costs.
The renovations include widening the greenway to 12 feet, improving drainage infrastructure, and realigning curves to create a safer and more comfortable experience for trail users. The project also added a new greenway connection near Dynasty Drive and a pedestrian bridge over Cary Parkway, which opened earlier this year as part of the project’s second phase.
The new bridge provides a safer crossing along the corridor and features public art by artist Vicki Scuri, incorporating design elements inspired by the surrounding natural environment. The project also included coordinated utility infrastructure improvements, allowing Cary to address multiple infrastructure needs while minimizing future disruptions.
“Cary’s more than 100 miles of greenways connect our community in ways that go far beyond recreation,” said Cassie Schumacher-Georgopoulos, Cary’s Transportation Director. “The reopening of Black Creek Greenway restores an important connection for residents and visitors while making the trail safer and more accessible for everyone. We’re proud to deliver these improvements ahead of schedule and excited to welcome the community back.”
In addition to finishing ahead of schedule, the project is expected to come in under its original construction bid of nearly $17.5 million, with final construction costs estimated at approximately $17.3 million.
Black Creek Greenway stretches approximately seven miles from Fred G. Bond Metro Park to Old Reedy Creek Road, connecting neighborhoods, parks, and recreational destinations throughout Cary. The corridor is also part of the East Coast Greenway, a developing trail network connecting communities from Maine to Florida.
The reopening comes as Cary celebrates surpassing 100 miles of greenways in 2026, reflecting the Town’s continued investment in providing safe, accessible connections for residents and visitors.
While the greenway is now open for public use, Cary plans to celebrate its reopening as part of the Teen Council’s annual First Walk on January 1, 2027, at 10 a.m. at North Cary Park.
