In fiery speech to Congress, Netanyahu vows ‘total victory’ in Gaza and denounces U.S. protesters

In fiery speech to Congress, Netanyahu vows ‘total victory’ in Gaza and denounces U.S. protesters

WASHINGTON (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged in a scathing speech to Congress to achieve “total victory” against Hamas and criticized American opponents of the war in Gaza as “idiots.” His combative stance comes in a visit the Biden administration hopes can yield progress in negotiations to end the fighting. Netanyahu used the high-profile address on Wednesday to a joint meeting of Congress to emphasize longstanding and close ties between the United States and Israel. But the speech put in sharp relief the divisions in American society stirred by the war, with dozens of Democratic lawmakers boycotting the address and thousands of protesters outside the Capitol condemning the war and the humanitarian crisis created by it.… Continue Reading

Panthers 1st-round pick Legette frustrated over first practice, but team excited about his potential

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Xavier Legette’s first NFL training camp practice didn’t go as he expected, leaving the Carolina Panthers rookie wide receiver frustrated with his own performance and seeking better. Legette said he failed to catch a pass in his first practice since a hamstring injury that sidelined him for a portion of OTAs and minicamp. Despite what Legette perceived to be a bad day, it’s unlikely to dampen the enthusiasm the Panthers have over the first-round draft pick from South Carolina. Panthers coach Dave Canales has big expectations for the 6-foot-3, 227-pound Legette, whom he called a “massive receiver” with “explosive ability.”… Continue Reading

Voters who want Cornel West on presidential ballot sue North Carolina election board

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Three registered voters in North Carolina are suing the State Board of Elections, alleging that it violated their constitutional rights. At issue is the board’s rejection last week of a petition seeking recognition for a political party that would put Cornel West on the presidential ballot. Democratic board chair Alan Hirsch said he had concerns in part about how a group called People Over Party collected many of the signatures. Republican lawmakers are questioning whether the board’s Democratic majority is trying to keep West off the ballot because he could take votes away from the Democratic presidential nominee.… Continue Reading

Two North Carolina public universities may see academic degree cuts soon after board vote

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The University of North Carolina Board of Governors voted to authorize chancellors at two public universities to move forward with more than a dozen degree program cuts. The programs to be eliminated are at UNC Asheville and UNC Greensboro. Wednesday’s vote took place after chancellors from both universities requested cuts partially because of enrollment issues. UNC Asheville may now remove four undergraduate majors and two concentrations for students pursuing language degrees. UNC Greensboro could eliminate 14 degrees within various bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate programs. Faculty at UNC Asheville expressed concern with the decision in a letter.… Continue Reading
